As a concert pianist she plays the great halls and has premiered many landmark compositions; as Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music she inspires as well as teaches (Junyan Chen\, who appeared in our last Series\, was a student); she is a regular broadcaster\, a sought-after curator of music festivals\, and the Music Director and Principal Conductor of Brighton Philharmonic. \nThe first half of tonight’s programme is rustic\, jazzy\, bluesy – Schubert’s Austrian country dances; Leonid Desyatnikov’s 20th century re-working of folk melodies from western Ukraine\, and Joanna MacGregor’s own tributes to Nina Simone. \nBrahms 3rd Piano Sonata fills the second half. Brahms wrote this sonata as he turned 20\, the same year that Robert Schumann catapulted him from obscurity into musical stardom. It is an enormous piece and with so many ideas that it takes five movements to follow them all through. Busoni) Chaconne from Violin Partita no.2 in D minor\, BWV 1004 \n  \nJapanese pianist Yuko Sano gave her first international recital in Salzburg at the age of 8 and has since performed at major venues across Europe\, South America and Asia. In April 2026\, she made her recital debut at Suntory Hall\, Tokyo\, with the programme that she gives tonight. \nIt is a lovely programme: sunny Mozart\, sparkling Scarlatti\, Chopin strutting proudly\, Schubert’s Theme and Variations\, and the excitement of the UK premiere of Jacques Allen’s prize-winning composition. \nFraming all this\, are arrangements of works originally composed for other instruments. Widmung (Dedication) is a love song from a collection that Robert Schumann presented to Clara on the eve of their long-delayed marriage. The Chaconne\, on the other hand\, started life as a partita for solo violin. Ferruccio Busoni took just the final movement and transformed it into a dramatic and dignified stand-alone piece for solo piano. He was already sought after when he gave a recital at SJE Arts in 2015; now he travels the world and\, at home\, is a regular at Wigmore Hall\, the South Bank and BBC Proms. \nBenjamin offers some all-time favourites – Beethoven’s lovely ‘Moonlight’ sonata for one – but he also springs surprises. The opening Chaconne is by Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. The piece was a commission from prize-winning pianist Marina Mdiwani and\, as Gubaidulina explained\, she kept Mdiwani’s specific abilities very much in mind as she worked. The result is wonderfully virtuosic. \nLate Scriabin is difficult\, atonal and intense\, but his earlier work is accessible. For Sonata no.2 he took inspiration from the sea –it was partly composed during his honeymoon in the Southern Crimea – and he paints sunlight dancing on waves\, gentle moonbeams in the dark of night\, sombre agitation from the ocean depths. Like all Scriabin’s work\, the piece is fiendishly challenging for the pianist. DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 9 Variations on a Minuet by Duport\, K.573 \nFranz Schubert 4 Impromptus D.899\, op.90 \nInterval \nFryderyk Chopin Nocturne op.27\, no.1 \nFryderyk Chopin Piano Sonata no.3 in B minor\, op.58 \n  \nCanadian pianist Ryan Wang already had a string of scholarships and awards behind him when he became BBC Young Musician of the Year 2024. Now he juggles studies on the dual degree programme at Harvard-New England Conservatory with an international concert career. \nMozart wrote his delightful set of variations on the road. He was travelling to Berlin to perform for the King of Prussia\, whose Chamber Music Director and cellist was one Jean-Pierre Duport. A tactful tribute for his hosts. Next\, Ryan gives us Schubert’s first set of Impromptus – four distinct pieces that are impossible to pin down in words since Schubertian magic can transform a march into a melody and despair to joy in the space of a few bars. \nFollowing the interval\, we have Chopin\, first a nocturne and then Piano Sonata no.3. It will be interesting to hear this sonata played one week after Piano Sonata no.2 (Benjamin Grosvenor\, 18 November). Sonata no. 2 is the more dramatic – it has the famous funeral march slow movement – but by no.3 Chopin has completely mastered the form. In his own words: \n“For many years I’ve wanted to spend some time focusing on Mozart’s piano sonatas and have long felt sceptical of the broadly held view that these remarkable works are the poor siblings of his piano concertos – less original\, inspired\, and engaging than their symphonic counterparts. From the transparency\, discretion\, and humour of Poulenc\, through the vocal and operatic world of Chopin and Weber\, to the development of variation form and\, ultimately\, the dramatic tension of Beethoven’s musical language – all of these threads are traceable to\, and audible in\, the piano sonatas of Mozart.” \nIn the first instalment of Mozart + last year\, Paul Lewis paired piano sonatas no. 10 and no. 14 with pieces by Poulenc and Debussy. Tonight we are treated to no. 6 and no. 11\, alongside seminal sets of variations by Mendelssohn and Copland. Mendelssohn – ‘the Mozart of the Romantic Age’ – is a logical choice but why Copland? It was present through her childhood\, a big part of her training\, and in 2000 she won Silver Medal at the 14th International Chopin Piano Competition. She has performed his works across Europe and the Americas and recorded his piano sonatas\, piano concertos\, preludes\, nocturnes\, waltzes and more. Happily\, she has come up with something just as enticing this year. \nIn 1907 Béla Bartók’s friend Kodály returned from a trip to Paris with some of Debussy’s music. Bartók was profoundly impressed – like Debussy\, he had been seeking a fresh approach. The following year he published his 14 Bagatelles\, uncluttered pieces reflecting experiments with tonality and\, in some of them his love for Hungarian folk melodies\, for instance no.4\, the lament of a cowherd who went to sleep and awoke to find that all his cows had vanished. \nElisabeth begins the second half with Thomas Adès’ Blanca Variations\, a set of variations based on a Judaeo-Spanish folk tune\, and follows it with Brahms’ beautiful Klavierstücke. Her finale is Robert Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien. Schumann can be troubled but this piece shows him at his joyful\, teasing best. DESCRIPTION:Ludwig van Beethoven \nSonata for Piano no.19 in G minor\, op.49\, no.1 \nSonata for Piano no. 20 in G major\, op.49\, no.2 \nSonata for Piano no.17 in D minor\, op.31\, no.2 ‘The Tempest’ \nInterval \nSonata for Piano no.8 in C minor\, op.13 ‘Pathétique’ \nSonata for Piano no.31 in A-flat major\, op.110 \n  \nBeethoven wrote 32 sonatas for the piano and Angela Hewitt has recorded them all\, in nine critically acclaimed albums. She has also performed them around the world. \nTonight’s selection gives us Beethoven across his life. Early compositions that are uncomplicated and charming; passion and drama with ‘Pathétique’; self-searching in ‘The Tempest’ as he came to terms with his deafness\, and finally op.110\, the penultimate one. If Beethoven was ever at peace with the world\, it is perhaps at the end of this sonata. \nAngela Hewitt has given us many wonderful concerts\, first at SJE Arts and latterly at St John’s College. DESCRIPTION:We are most grateful to Professor Richard Jenkyns for his generous sponsorship of this concert. \n  \nClaude Debussy Ballade \nMaurice Ravel Valses nobles et sentimentales \nFerenc Liszt Ballade no.2 in B minor\, S.171 \nFerenc Liszt Mephisto Waltz no.1\, S.514 \nInterval \nFryderyk Chopin 4 Ballades \n  \nStephen Hough’s programme focuses on waltzes and ballades as seen by composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Ravel’s suite of 8 pieces is a modernistic reimagining\, a kind of fragmented memory of a dance. Liszt’s 4 Mephisto Waltzes are completely different. Strongly narrative\, they are based on the Faust legend and no.1 is the wedding at the village inn\, a scene of wild exuberance\, dancing and sensuality. \nBack in medieval times\, French minstrels travelled the land singing their chanson-balladée\, tales of knightly heroism\, love and betrayal. The tradition went through transformations – in the Renaissance the ballade became a form of poetry – but it was Chopin’s idea to take the idea instrumental. His 4 Ballades retain drama and story-telling\, but wordlessly\, and they are among his greatest works. Stephen Hough has performed them around the world and recorded them to great acclaim.
