SUMMARY:Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (2025-2026 season)
DESCRIPTION:The original performer for this concert date was British pianist Jonathan Powell\, whose sad death was announced at the beginning of January. \nPlease note that Jean-Efflam has made a small change to his programme. Instead of Ohana 12 Etudes d’interprétation for piano\, IV. Main gauche seule (in memoriam Maurice Ravel) he will be playing Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales. \nBeethoven Sonata for Piano no.3 in C major\, op.2\nHummel Sonata in E flat major\, op.13\nInterval\nSchumann Faschingsschwank aus Wien\nRavel Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn\nRavel Valses nobles et sentimentales\nRavel La valse for solo piano \nWe are enormously grateful to Jean-Efflam Bavouzet for stepping in to the Series at this late date. A pianist of international renown\, his recordings and performances of the complete solo piano works of Haydn and\, more recently of Ravel\, have received widespread acclaim. Those who attended his February 2024 concert at SJE Arts will remember also that he a brilliant communicator. \nJean-Efflam brings a programme of beautiful music wrapped in a web of connections. Beethoven’s virtuosic piano sonata no.3 is dedicated to his teacher Haydn. Hummel\, a contemporary and friend of Beethoven’s\, also took lessons with Haydn. Schumann wrote his piece after witnessing the extravagant Mardi Gras celebrations while he was staying in Vienna. \nRavel’s short Menuet – it is only a minute and a half – was a commission to mark the centenary of Haydn’s death. Jean-Efflam follows this first with Ravel’s six Valses nobles et sentimentales\, written two years before World War I\, and then with La Valse\, a composition that was interrupted and terrifyingly changed by the same devastating war. Noctuelles (Night moths)\nII. Oiseaux tristes (Sad birds)\nIII. Une barque sur l’océan (A boat on the ocean)\nIV. Alborada del gracioso (The jester’s morning song)\nV. La vallée des cloches (The valley of bells) \n  \n‘One of the most thoughtful and sensitive of British pianists’ The Times \nMishka Rushdie Momen studied with Dame Imogen Cooper and with Sir András Schiff at Kronberg Academy. She has appeared across the USA and Europe\, her last season’s recitals including Wigmore Hall\, Aldeburgh Festival and the Re-opening Festival of the Frick Collection\, New York. \nHer programme includes three Beethoven piano sonatas\, from a very early one to late. She starts in the chronological middle with the lovely ‘Moonlight’ sonata. The catchy name was added by others: Beethoven himself subtitled the sonata ‘Quasi una fantasia’ and it is a kind of fantasy\, opening with a blissfully dreamy adagio\, the melody building to an aching sadness and mystery. \nAs the final piece in her programme\, Mishka leaves Beethoven for Ravel. Miroirs is a brilliant impressionistic piece\, composed when Ravel had begun to make his mark with  the public but was still battling for recognition with the entrenched powers at Paris Conservatoire. DESCRIPTION:Mozart Sonata in C major\, K.330\nChopin Fantasie in f minor op.49\nLiszt Tarantella Venezia e Napoli\nInterval\nMussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition \nAlexander Gavrylyuk was a late discovery for SJE Arts and we were entranced by the beauty and subtlety of his playing. Happily\, he is back in Europe this season and we’re delighted to be welcoming him to the new Series. Born in Ukraine with Australian citizenship\, Alexander’s big break came when he won Gold Medal at the 2005 Arthur Rubenstein Piano Masters. \nTonight’s programme begins with Mozart’s sunny sonata in C major\, written when Mozart was newly married and all was going well for him in Vienna. Chopin’s Fantasie in f minor follows\, a mysterious and contemplative piece despite its marching rhythms. Then – dancing to the interval – Liszt’s fast and furious Tarantella. \nThe second half is Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This piece came about after a close friend of Mussorgsky’s\, artist Viktor Hartmann\, died suddenly at the age of 39. In the form of a stroll through an exhibition of Hartmann’s work\, with a pause to look at each picture\, it is one of those special pieces that is so memorable it can seem too familiar. We are confident that it won’t. At Wigmore Hall in 2023\, Alexander received two standing ovations for his performance. \nFrom a review of Alexander’s concert at Wigmore Hall\, November 2023\n‘…But it is Mussorgsky ‘Pictures’ that will resound around these walls for long to come with a breathtaking recreation of an old war horse given miraculous new life. DESCRIPTION:We are very grateful to Professor Graham Falconer for his generous sponsorship of this concert. \n  \nCouperin Les Barricades Mistérieuses\, Le Tic-Toc-Choc ou Les Maillotins\, Les Ombres Errantes\, Les Tricoteuses\nMessiaen Préludes – La colombe\, Un reflet dans le vent\nRavel Le tombeau de Couperin\nInterval\nBeach Variations on Balkan Themes\nRavel La valse \n  \nJunyan Chen came away from the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition with an armful of awards: silver medal from the main competition\, the chamber music prize\, and the work by a woman composer prize. Until recently a post-graduate student with Joanna MacGregor at the Royal Academy of Music\, Junyan is praised for ‘exhilarating and technically thrilling’ performances. \nApart from a lovely set of variations by American composer Amy Beach\, Junyan’s programme looks to France and first to the sumptuous Baroque court of Louis XIV\, where François Couperin wrote these intriguingly named short pieces for the 2-manual harpsichord. \nRavel was an admirer of Couperin and all things Baroque\, and Tombeau de Couperin – an elegant suite of Baroque-style dance movements – is his tribute. La Valse was started with a similar idea\, as a tribute to Johann Strauss\, but World War I intervened. The Viennese ballroom erupts with distorted rhythms and clashing harmonies to spin ever faster to a shuddering conclusion. It is her first cancellation ever and she sends her apologies to the audience. \nFortunately – with the help of Professor Martyn Harry – we have been able to find a last-minute replacement performer\, the Malaysian pianist Julian Chan. Julian will be presenting the Romantic programme that he has recently been touring in Germany. We very much hope that you will still be joining us and giving your support to Julian. \nProgramme \nFranz Schubert/Ferenc Liszt Frühlingsglaube S558\, no.7\nAlban Berg Sonata in B minor\, op.1\nRobert Schumann Bunte Blätter\, op.99\nFranz Schubert Sonata in C minor\, D958 \n\nA word from Professor Martyn Harry: \nIt’s a great shame indeed that Elisabeth Brauß has had to withdraw from tonight’s concert\, especially given her wonderful performance at the end of the last season at SJE: I know that Michèle is in discussion with her agent\, and it will not be long until Elisabeth returns to give her next concert at the International Piano Series. However Elisabeth’s indisposition also means that the opportunity has come up – at very short notice! – to hear a pianist who is widely regarded as one of our most promising emerging young instrumentalists. \nJulian Chan is younger and at an earlier stage of his career than Elisabeth\, but his characteristic pianistic attributes are already very much in place: an extraordinary technique and a very precise ear that he places entirely at the service of the music that in some way recalls an aspect of Elisabeth Brauß’s playing. He lets the music speak for itself\, and it will be particularly exciting to hear him perform one of Schubert’s works\, the Piano Sonata in C minor D. 958\, with the control of harmonic colouring that Julian frequently brings to early Romantic repertoire. \nJulian has just returned to the UK\, fresh from a tour of Germany where he has performed tonight’s repertoire. A former student of Ian Fountain and Michael Dussek at the Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded the Aud Jebsen Piano Fellowship\, Julian has already acquired a reputation for his imaginative programming\, with his concerts featuring works by figures as diverse as Sweelinck\, Alkan\, Messiaen and Rzewski alongside the core classical and romantic repertoire with which he has made his name. \nA prizewinner at a number of international piano competitions\, Julian Chan has already started to perform regularly in prestigious venues across Europe and Asia\, including at the Wigmore Hall\, Nanjing Poly Theatre\, and the Palau de la Música Catalana. Bach\nToccata in D major\, BWV912\nFrench Suite no.5 in G major\, BWV816\nChromatic Fantasia and Fugue\, BWV903\nInterval\nPartita no.5 in G major\nItalian Concerto\, BWV971\nPrelude and Fugue in A minor\, BWV894 \nAs a child Angela Hewitt listened to her organist father play Bach in Ottawa Cathedral\, her career was launched in 1985 when she won first prize at Toronto International Bach Competition\, in 2022 she completed her Bach Odyssey\, a project to perform all J.S. Bach’s keyboard works in major venues around the world. It is wonderful to have her present a complete J.S. Bach concert for us. \nThe programme starts with Bach in his twenties\, composing improvisatory toccatas at the court in Weimar. Next we catch him in Köthen\, aged thirty and writing the French suites as teaching aids. Then on to Leipzig where\, at fifty\, he brilliantly reimagines an Italian Concerto for the keyboard. \nAt this point chronology is thrown to the wind. Prelude and Fugue in A minor is the work of a fiery young Bach eager to show off his virtuosity as a performer. DESCRIPTION:We are very grateful to Professor Nick Couldry for his generous sponsorship of this concert. \n  \nBeethoven Piano Sonata no.29\, op.106 in B-flat major ‘Hammerklavier’\nInterval\nLyatoshinsky Three Preludes\, op.38\nLiszt 6 Paganini Etudes original version (Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini\, S.140) \nGold medallist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition 2013\, Ukraine-born pianist Vadym Kholodenko is sought after by major halls across Europe\, North America and Asia. This summer\, he made his debut at BBC Proms\, performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no.2. \nVadym starts straight in with Beethoven’s mighty Hammerklavier sonata\, its opening statement of fortissimo chords a challenge to the audience to sit up and pay attention. The longest of Beethoven’s piano sonatas\, it is also one of the most unconventional. \nViolinist Niccolò Paganini enjoyed superstar status\, crowds flocking to witness his dazzling performances. When Liszt heard him he was captivated\, and set about piano transcriptions of some of the pieces. Published as 6 Paganini Etudes\, the work failed to take off – it was just too difficult to play – and Liszt was persuaded to revise it. This version\, S.141\, is the one normally performed in concert halls today – but not tonight. Vadym Kholodenko is giving us the full pianistic pyrotechnics of the original. \nVadym is an old friend from SJE Arts\, and we have come to expect much of him. She stepped into the limelight in 2011 with first  prize at the Liszt Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar. Three years later\, she won the 2014 Liszt International Piano Competition in Utrecht. \nMariam brings a lovely programme: a Mozart Fantasia\, Chopin’s serendipitous pairing of a Polonaise in stile brillante with a muted nocturne-like Andante\, Mendelssohn’s ever popular Rondo Capriccioso and a Rhapsodie in which Liszt recalls a visit to Spain and Portugal with striking Iberian rhythms. \nThe second half opens with Schubert’s 4 Impromptus\, beautiful lyrical singing pieces\, and closes with a return to Liszt. Followers from SJE Arts will remember Mariam’s performances of Hungarian Rhapsodies nos.2\, 10\, 13  and 14. Now she gives us no.12\, possibly the most ingenious of all\, a meshing of multiple folk themes and a range from melancholy to rousing dance. Rachmaninov) Liebesleid\nRavel Valses nobles et sentimentales\nInterval\nBeethoven 33 Variations in C on a Waltz by Diabelli\, op.120 \n‘Osborne …. has that special ability to make music that you thought you knew inside out seem fresh and totally alive’ (The Guardian) \nWe are delighted to have Scottish pianist Steven Osborne to open the new Series. A force on the international stage since winning the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1997\, Steven has appeared fifteen times at the BBC Proms and is a regular at both Wigmore Hall and Lincoln Center New York. In the New Year’s Honours 2022 he was appointed OBE for his Services to Music. \nSteven’s final concert at SJE Arts was a brilliantly informal delve into 20th century American piano jazz. Tonight\, he invites us to join him for ‘Reflections on the waltz’. There is a young Robert Schumann imagining a masked ball\, Lili Boulanger taking a dreamy stroll through a garden\, Ravel’s eight-movement suite of melodically beautiful but decidedly modern music. \nThen comes the Diabelli Variations – Beethoven’s response to Anton Diabelli’s open challenge for a set of variations on a simple little waltz tune. Beethoven submitted his entry late – well past Diabelli’s deadline – but it was magnificent.
