Beethoven wrote 32 sonatas for the piano and Angela Hewitt has recorded them all, in nine critically acclaimed albums. She has also performed them around the world.

Tonight’s selection gives us Beethoven across his life. Early compositions that are uncomplicated and charming; passion and drama with ‘Pathétique’; self-searching in ‘The Tempest’ as he came to terms with his deafness, and finally op.110, the penultimate one. If Beethoven was ever at peace with the world, it is perhaps at the end of this sonata.

Angela Hewitt has given us many wonderful concerts, first at SJE Arts and latterly at St John’s College. We are thrilled to be able to present her, and this important programme, in the new Sohmen Concert Hall.
